Robin McKelle - Soul Flower

Robin McKelle might have called this album The Real McKelle. “It’s the record I’ve always dreamed of making. Not that there was anything stopping me in the past, it’s simply that things panned out differently.” The singer herself wrote most of the songs on this new production, a contemporary blend of soul and rhythm ’n’ blues that avoids today’s retro tendencies. “I love that music so much that I couldn’t see myself doing something ‘in the style of…”. I grew up listening to Nina Simone and Gladys Knight. I sang their classics and what I enjoy most today is building my own repertoire in that same soulful vein.” Soul Flower mainly consists of original tracks along with a few covers, including an upbeat Walk On By.

We were already familiar with Robin’s talents as a singer - her powerful, expressive contralto voice and warm timbre that enchants audiences - but here we discover her songwriting skills and gift for devising familiar melodies that take hold immediately. The album is the fruit of her long exposure to gospel, soul and blues, and a collective achievement too. Robin McKelle insisted on recognising her associates on this album, even down to the cover credit: Robin McKelle & The Flytones. “The Flytones acknowledgment sets this project apart from my solo and previous jazz work, and also stresses the joint effort on this album with Sam Barsh (Avishai Cohen’s former pianist) and Derek Nievergelt (her current bassist). They’re from the jazz world, but they love this music. We worked on the tracks together, some even on stage when we were touring.”

Ms. McKelle’s pen dips lucidly into the ink of today’s gloomy news. Backed by Donny Hathaway’s keyboards, So It Goes is about “the increasing difficulty of people’s everyday lives and the feeling so many share that they can no longer get by, although they continue to battle on anyway.” A woman of character, the singer shows great insight when it comes to affairs of the heart. Tell You One Thing brims with Ray Charles-style orchestrations and backing vocals. The piano and guitar solos remind us of the jazz background of the album’s musicians. Fairytale Ending has a vintage, very northern-soul flavour reminiscent of the legendary productions heard back in the sixties in clubs in the North of England: a blend of Motown and Stax. Ms. McKelle’s voice unfailingly and expertly masters new dynamic or fragile tones.

Don’t Give Up is deliberately measured, like a classic blues number. A Wurlitzer and lazy organ accompany the singer’s amorous lament. On the very catchy Change - a gospel shuffle brought to the boil by drums and organ - her sincerity and commitment take us back to the sixties heyday of the protest song. “You turn on the radio in the morning, you watch TV in the evening, and all you hear is ‘crisis, crisis, crisis’. The word’s repeated ten thousand times a day, wherever you are in the world. So I’ve tried to offer a take based on real life - people’s experience, the everyday impression they have.” Still Ms. McKelle, a native of Rochester, NY, ends the session on a glamorous jazz note, with a cover of I’m A Fool To Want You (immortalised by Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday).

The album also includes joint ventures: two duets, two encounters overflowing with emotion. On the first, she teams up with a soul veteran who, after a long absence, has returned to the limelight over the last few years: Lee Fields. “In fact, weirdly, there was all this revival - Raphael Saadiq, Sharon Jones - when I was involved in jazz. I was aching to join in. Among all the artists was one I admired more than anyone, especially after My World, his record on the Truth & Soul label. Lee (Fields) has great presence and sincerity. In the studio, when we covered the Bee Gees’ To Love Somebody (also recorded by Janis Joplin, Dusty Springfield and others), I felt such a thrill. His voice was so powerful it covered mine.”

Another high point on the album is an original number sung with Gregory Porter, a rising star of vocal jazz whose reputation has spread beyond the jazz world, like Robin McKelle’s. “I saw him in a club in New York. He was on at the Smoke one evening and I sat at the bar and loved it. He has an impressive voice and a real sensitivity too. The duet’s an unusual exercise. The aim wasn’t just to record a performance, but to build up a genuine connection for the space of a few minutes to tell a story. That story, Love’s Work, is about a couple’s relationship when they have to stand firm and keep going when things get bad.” A wonderful, subtly nuanced duet worthy of the great pioneers and featuring an irresistible melody (with brass and Wurlitzer piano to fan the flame).

Some have one life; others two or even three. During her singing career, Robin McKelle has been through more than one renaissance. She came to the public eye with a first album called Introducing Robin McKelle (2006), followed by Modern Antique (2008) - two big-band swing sessions. “I’d recorded a demo, tapes to get dates. They ended up on a record-company desk and the first album was released with all the positive spin that followed. I can’t say I have any regrets: I started touring all over the world, playing bigger and bigger venues thanks to that first album and then the second.”

Another turning point came at the start of 2010, with Mess Around, breaking with a certain classicism and exploring themes borrowed from different songwriters - Leonard Cohen, Doc Pomus, Willie Dixon and The Beatles - but especially marking a new aesthetic approach in the form of a return to roots for the native of New York State. “People accepted the transition, because they felt it was natural. I could express my personality better in that soul-jazz range. It was a sort of liberation. Today, I feel totally at ease with myself. It was a risk, but I don’t like being tied to the status quo.”

Robin McKelle had already sung soul in her first life. Influenced by her mother, a member of the church choir, the young Robin McKelle began to show her talent in R&B groups from the age of fifteen. After taking up the piano and French horn, she studied jazz at the University of Miami (1994-1996) before attending and graduating from the Berklee College of Music in Boston (1999). Moving to the West Coast, she regularly performed as a backing singer. “I learned my trade.” She subsequently went back to the Berklee College Of Music as a teacher and entered the Thelonious Monk competition in Washington, winning a prize in 2004. “Then came an uncertain time. I sang with groups, we covered hits and I performed at weddings while I waited for my moment to come.”

Now she is entering a new chapter in her eventful history without looking back. “From time to time, I think about it, but it’s all a long way off now. I feel as if I’m beginning something new with Soul Flower and I’m looking forward to winning the public over on stage.” Indeed, when she performs live, Robin McKelle’s singing talent takes on a whole new dimension.

Sue Bell - Only Love

Seattle songbird Sue Bell sculpts a new album of fourteen standard love songs. A fixture in the Seattle jazz scene, Bell has performed and recorded with some of the premier jazz musicians in the Pacific Northwest, many of whom appear on this disc.
Bell delivers a sensuous performance on the romantic ‘Too Late Now,’ then the lady picks up the pace on the short but buoyant burner ‘Exactly Like You.’ Other tunes containing a measure of swing here are ‘Let’s Get Away From It All,’ and ‘You Can’t Loose A Broken Heart.'
Sue Bell’s ‘Only Love’ provides heartfelt interpretations of beautiful love songs delivered in a light jazzy fashion. Her sweet vocal style seems perfect for inspiring the romantic feelings you want to convey in voicing warm and gentle jazzy love songs, as she does here.

Harvey Siders, Emmy Award-winning producer/composer, and known jazz critic for Down Beat Jazz Times and The Tacoma Tribune, writes:
The most versatile tool in her vocal arsenal is that voice. Sue Bell, is blessed with a wondrous, sensitive instrument that can transform ballads into tear-provoking poetry. Her low register is warm, occasionally smokey, and very inviting, with her upper register sounding extremely plaintive.
So many little things pleased me about this album. The medley at the end is so appropriate … good enough to be a single.

Club Des Belugas - Forward (2012)

German nu-jazz project Club Des Belugas drop their sixth album, Forward, with a host of guest singers on board for this silky smooth voyage through jazz hooks and downtempo beats. "Straight To Memphis" for example sees main men Maxim Illion and Kitty The Bill explore a Nina Simone-esque swing, while "Peanut Vendor" evokes the big band bop of exotica artists like Esquivel mixed with a South American bounce. A very enjoyable mix of songs that take in everything from lounge jazz to rootsy, bluesy stomps.

jenny scheinman

Anyone who has seen Jenny Scheinman perform either as a headliner or backing another artist has witnessed the absolute physical delight she exhibits in playing and improvising. Mischief & Mayhem, the title of her self-released album -- after recordings on Avant, Tzadik, Koch/E1, and Cryptogramophone -- is the very first to aurally display this trait. With a star-studded cast -- drummer Jim Black, bassist Todd Sickafoose, and guitarist Nels Cline -- Scheinman offers her canny compositional wisdom, a wicked sense of instrumental humor, and the ability to symbiotically engage in deep, communicative dialogue in improvisation. As a composer, her balance of dynamic, melody, dissonance, and texture are equally remarkable parts of these eight tunes. Opener "A Ride with Polly Jean" commences with Sickafoose playing a repetitive pattern joined by brushed snare and a plucked violin. Scheinman quickly asserts a melody line that actually feels like travel. Cline's guitar playing and effects enter the middle and fill it out, making that scenario complete. "Sand Dipper" begins in the ether and really gets moving about halfway through; it features some wooly soloing by Scheinman and kinetic, almost drum'n'bass-styled drumming from Black. "Blues for the Double Vee" begins as a rock tune but quickly establishes itself as something else entirely without losing the feel. The album's longest track, "Devil's Ink," is also its most haunting and abstract -- for its initial two-thirds. It eventually establishes a fractured groove that's so gnarly and knotty it feels like the Mahavishnu Orchestra with Jean-Luc Ponty. "Ali Farka Touche" finds Cline emulating the Malian guitar giant's phrasing and tone for a bit, but between Sickafoose's and Black's interlocking groove and Scheinman's aggressive soloing, it becomes a driving rock tune. The set closes with the hairy, ever shifting, prog rock-cum-avant-jazz rock number "The Mite." It's the set's most humorous track and has moments of Cline utterly unhinged. These tunes are really small compositional wonders with lots of kinetic space for interplay woven in. Mischief & Mayhem is the most physically attractive album in Scheinman's career thus far, because you can actually feel the collective's delight in each of these performances. It's marvelous, sly, sensual, and rugged from top to bottom.

Apart from that...I am a singer, composer/songwriter, vocal coach and mom. married to a wonderful man, Gregory Boyd, who is also a musician. I have been around many different styles in my life. Not because I cannot make up my mind, but because I love great music no matter the style. I love singing jazz, blues, rock, country, pop, soul etc but within the past years I have come to find out that what I love the most is singing jazz. I am a very spontaneous and intuitive person and it goes well with jazz. I like a certain degree of unpredictibility and alot of room to play with my creativity and spontaneity when I sing. I like to take chances and go where my feelings lead me when I sing a song. I did a cd with old danish standards by danish composer Kai Normann Andersen a few years back. One of the songs "man binder os på mund og hånd" which is on the myspace, player made it to danish national radio DR/P4 on regular rotation. So did one of my own songs "I miss you" . Currently I perform as a background vocalist as well as a soloist with The 10 person orchestra The Big Gumbo Show-a New Orleans music experience, which is getting repeat performances in Norway and Denmark and is a GREAT band by the way, consisting of some of the finest musicians. the tunes you can listen to on this site is from a live recording I did 3 years ago with Uffe Steen, Henrik Mueller, Gregory Boyd and Ole Visby ( Prelude to a kiss, Black Coffee and China eyes which is composed and written by Katrine Madsen and Helle Hansen. I am currently in the process of releasing a jazzalbum with some of Scandinavias finest ; Lars Jansson, Jesper Bodilsen, MortenLund and Tomas Franck,. The album is planned to be released in late spring 2011.

Joe Zawinul e WRD Big Band - Brown Street (2 CD Live)

When Joe Zawinul solos on his new live album, Brown Street, he takes whatever song he and his band (including the German big band WDR) are playing to a very odd place. With a keyboard sound that reminds me of a 1980s ARP synthesizer and liberal use of a vocoder, Zawinul sounds like he’s on a different planet than the other players.

The album’s first track, Brown Street, an old Weather Report song, has an African feel to it, with a chord progression that sounds like an African folk song. Zawinul’s playing is lively, with an almost zydeco energy to it. The WDR big band brings pomp to the song’s chorus, playing beautiful, magisterial horn lines underneath it. Victor Bailey’s bass playing maintains a quick, jumpy rhythm, keeping the song bouncing. The song sounds like something off Paul Simon’s Graceland album minus the vocals.

Fast City feels like a bop song, albeit one adorned with keyboard, electric guitar (courtesy of Paul Shigihara) and electric bass. Paul Heller, of the WDR big band, plays a fiery tenor sax solo as Bailey’s bass scurries underneath. Zawinul’s keyboard sounds like Herbie Hancock’s did on Headhunters: spacey and bassy. At around 6:51 in the track, Zawinul plays a Middle Eastern-sounding keyboard melody while a sample of a man chanting in Arabic is heard.

Badia/ Boogie Woogie Waltz (another Weather Report classic) begins like an ambient piece from musician and Brian Eno collaborator Harold Budd – all airy atmosphere and Zawinul’s haunting trills. But soon Bailey’s bass comes in, laying down low, heavy notes as the groove pops its head up. Zawinul somehow gets his vocoder to sound like a sample of a chanting Indian woman before the full group bursts into a horn heavy groove that could be the theme to a 70s cop show. Olivier Peters wails away on his soprano sax as Shigihara plays a comping machine-gun guitar riff.

Sampled sounds of a train begin Night Passage, an easygoing and funky song that features the beautiful flugelhorn playing of Kenny Rampton. About a minute and half into the song, a very swing-era chorus appears with doubled horn lines and an instantly familiar chord progression. Zawinul’s transmissions from planet Fusion intercede every once and awhile, but you barely notice his keyboard most of the time.

Procession begins with a fuzzy, subterranean-sounding keyboard tone that reminds me of the kind of synthesizer sounds found on Brian Eno’s Another Green World (fun fact: that album features a track called “Zawinul/Lava”). The song then moves into a funkier section that features a horn line straight out of Isaac Hayes’ bag of tricks. This section moves into a jazzier one, with horn lines from WDR ascending and descending quite conventionally.

As much as I want to rave about Brown Street, I have a few reservations. The songs have a way of constantly changing gears, moving from spacey weirdness to funky world music to the kind of conventional swing progressions you don’t expect from a fusion legend. This is frustrating for a listener like me who likes a particular tone to infuse the whole of a song. However, I’m sure this very shifting of styles might appeal to many fusion fans. Another issue I have is that Zawinul is too much of a team player. He has amazing melodic gifts, but too often relegates himself to the position of sideman. Unlike a lot of jazz purists, I’m not allergic to synthesizers, and I wanted to hear more of Zawinul’s weirdness. That being said, Brown Street has an energy and eclecticism that is sure to excite fusion and jazz fans alike.
